Cambridge Expressive Legs

These notes summarise an "expressive legs" workshop taught by Jenny Frances and Ricardo Oria in December 2004.

The lesson worked on maintaing the connection while moving around one another.

Th lesson began with some warming up exercises:

    With everyone in a circle; each stands on one foot and rotates the foot from the ankle and then the leg from the hip until relaxed, then works on the other leg.

Then we found a key parada position with follower stepping across in front of the leader, for example:

    From facing one another;

Leader steps forward on his right leg, so follower steps back on her left leg;

Leader pivots his follower 180 on her left leg so she takes a backward step in front of him as he pivots 90 and collects in front of her;

Follower is now in position ..

... add a mordita and pasada ...

    From facing one another;

Leader steps forward on his right leg, so follower steps back on her left leg;

Leader pivots his follower 180 on her left leg so she takes a backward step onto her right leg in front of him as he pivots 90 and collects in front of her;

Leader - while keeping his torso still so his follower does not move - moves his right foot forward alongside his follower's left foot;

Still keeping his torso still he moves his left foot into position to sandwich hs follower's left foot;

Leader now steps back and to his right with his right leg while keeping his torso forward so his follower still does not move;

He now invites his follower forward onto her left leg and begins to pivot her in the pasada as she takes time to brush her free right foot up one side of his calf and down the other as she steps over his left foot and into a forward step ...

... and added a little playtime to the follower's pasada...

From facing one another;

Leader steps forward on his right leg, so follower steps back on her left leg;

Leader pivots his follower 180 on her left leg so she takes a backward step onto her right leg in front of him as he pivots 90 and collects in front of her;

Leader - while keeping his torso still so his follower does not move - moves his right foot forward alongside his follower's left foot;

Still keeping his torso still he moves his left foot into position to sandwich hs follower's left foot;

Leader now steps back and to his right with his right leg while keeping his torso forward so his follower still does not move;

He now invites his follower forward onto her left leg and begins to pivot her in the pasada as she takes time to brush her free right foot up one side of his calf and leader lifts his free left foot to play with hers for a while before he sets his foot down again and she brushes her free right foot down the other side of his calf as she steps over his left foot and into a forward step ...

... and a chance for the follower to bite her leader:

    From facing one another;

Leader steps forward on his right leg, so follower steps back on her left leg;

Leader pivots his follower 180 on her left leg so she takes a backward step onto her right leg in front of him as he pivots 90 and collects in front of her;

Leader - while keeping his torso still so his follower does not move - moves his right foot forward alongside his follower's left foot;

Still keeping his torso still he moves his left foot into position to sandwich his follower's left foot;

Leader now steps back and to his right with his right leg while keeping his torso forward so his follower still does not move;

He now invites his follower forward onto her left leg and begins to pivot her in the pasada;

She takes the intiative and playfully closes her right foot against his for a mordita before she steps over his left foot and into a forward step ...

  And, finally, a gancho and forward boleo after the mordita / pasada
    From facing one another;

Leader steps forward on his right leg, so follower steps back on her left leg;

Leader pivots his follower 180 on her left leg so she takes a backward step onto her right leg in front of him as he pivots 90 and collects in front of her;

Leader - while keeping his torso still so his follower does not move - moves his right foot forward alongside his follower's left foot;

Still keeping his torso still he moves his left foot into position to sandwich hs follower's left foot;

Leader now steps back and to his right with his right leg while keeping his torso forward so his follower still does not move;

He now invites his follower forward onto her left leg and begins to pivot her in the pasada as she takes time to brush her free right foot up one side of his calf and down the other as she steps over his left foot and into a forward step ...

... which he interrupts by reversing the giro lead to create a gancho as her right leg is blocked by his thigh...

... and releases the gancho by turning her back slightly without a weight change ...

... he steps around in front of her pivotting her right leg in front of her left - the forward boleo.

and all together:

From facing one another;

Leader steps forward on his right leg, so follower steps back on her left leg;

Leader pivots his follower 180 on her left leg so she takes a backward step onto her right leg in front of him as he pivots 90 and collects in front of her;

Leader - while keeping his torso still so his follower does not move - moves his right foot forward alongside his follower's left foot;

Still keeping his torso still he moves his left foot into position to sandwich hs follower's left foot;

Leader now steps back and to his right with his right leg while keeping his torso forward so his follower still does not move;

He now invites his follower forward onto her left leg and begins to pivot her in the pasada ...

... she takes the intiative and playfully closes her right foot against his for a mordita then ...

... takes time to brush her free right foot up one side of his calf ...

... and leader lifts his free left foot to play with hers for a while before he sets his foot down again and she brushes her free right foot down the other side of his calf as she steps over his left foot and into a forward step ...

... which he interrupts by reversing the giro lead to create a gancho as her right leg is blocked by his thigh...

... and releases the gancho by turning her back slightly without a weight change ...

... he steps around in front of her pivotting her right leg in front of her left - the forward boleo.
